If you're feeling at all like me at the moment, the picture above and the mention of the festival will fill you with some mixed emotions. I think that I will be a bit of a basket case this Saturday.
What I have found strange is the number of little things that I miss or will miss. One of them is the drive out in the morning so filled with anticipation and excitement. Another is the drive back late in the evening with the lingering mid-summer twilight touching the roads and fields with a sense of magic and mystery. Of course there are the big things too: I've missed practicing with Diminished Fifth and sipping the wee bit of whiskey on the longer spring evenings as we polished up our act for the big day.
I will miss the festival itself and I will miss you all.
I couldn't let the day go by without mention and without thanking you all. Thank you for signing up, for taking that first step of committing to the festival and to the joy of making and sharing music. I hope that you'll all be back raring to go next year.
We will return, of that I am sure.
If you have the time, spare a thought for the good folk who volunteer their time, talent and energy with the WVCA. These are the folks who put the festival together behind the scenes and without whom there would be no festival at all. They have been tireless advocates for the festival within the community and may often times wonder if it is all worth it, particularly now during this pandemonium. I know the festival is worth it, and you do too.
Drop them a line if you're so inclined. I've included their addresses below.
And Saturday, wherever you are, raise a glass for Davey Settles the founder of the feast. It's his birthday (more or less) and he needs some celebrating.
Be safe. Be well. Wash those hands. Play music. Always play music.
Welcome to the Water Valley Celtic Festival
The annual Water Valley Celtic Festival is a one day lively and totally unique experience that features talent of all levels involving music, dance and stories performed by individuals and groups covering the range from amateur to professional level. This festival is patterned after the festival held at Feakle, Co. Clare, Ireland, which was the inspiration for the festival's founder Dave Settles.
The festival is designed to promote traditional Celtic material and local talent. The Calgary area has many fine festivals that promote imported talent and contemporary music. This festival is not designed to compete with other events but rather to add another dimension to the Celtic entertainment choices . . . . including comfort!! This event is all inside or weather protected by tents.
You will find performances in over 10 different venues including the historic church, schoolhouse and on an old-time general store porch, all in the picturesque community of Water Valley.
