Ghosts in the Hills

What is the likelihood of 2 musician/songwriters connecting at a music camp only to discover that they lived 10 minutes away from each other? Well, such was the case for Tim Babey (Mandolin) and Robb Moss (Acoustic Guitar) of Foothills County. Tim and Robb quickly discovered that their deep roots of Celtic, Bluegrass and folksy-bluesy originality blended with rich story-telling and toe tapping melodies was too much fun to keep secret. And so was formed the “Ghosts in the Hills” band. Tim and Robb have been playing throughout the Foothills area and Calgary for many years crossing multiple genres of Bluegrass, Celtic, Blues, Jazz and Folk.

Picture

James Thurgood

James Thurgood plays the mouth-organ (harmonica), accompanying himself on guitar, and sings the odd Maritime folk song.  Originally from Nova Scotia, he grew up hearing fiddle-tunes played on the piano by his mother, and on harmonica by his father.  As well, a grandfather in Prince Edward Island played harmonica, the other in Cape Breton played fiddle – all of which is to say that James came by it honestly, at least.  Starting on harmonica at age five, James soon began figuring out the familiar fiddle-tunes, then moved on to the unfamiliar tunes, and has continued his huffing and puffing, in fits and starts, to this day.  He has shared the stage with numerous far better musicians (names withheld by request and under threat), and has recorded two CDs - thousands of copies still available, while supplies last.

John Leeder

I’ve been making music most of my life, playing 5-striong banjo (mostly melodic clawhammer style, sort of) for almost 60 years and octave mandolin for almost 40. I enjoy many kinds of music, but my first love is Canadian traditional. I’ll be doing some of that, along with British and American Old-Time, as well as originals in that vein. I plan on doing one of my sets this year as a banjo concert/demonstration.
Back in the ‘80s I was President of the Canadian Folk Music Society for a couple of years; now I’m Honorary President of the Canadian Society for Traditional Music.

Lonni Robley

Lonni was raised in the porcupine hills of Claresholm, in a home where music was a constant fixture within the house. Hearing her father sing and play the guitar to bluegrass, and many of the great singer songwriters of the world, such as Gordon Lightfoot, Ian Tyson, Michael Martin Murphy, and Nanci Griffith greatly influenced her. It wasn’t until the age of 18, at Lonni’s first performance at her high school graduation that she realized she had a bit of talent, which sparked a new hobby and passion. She began to write her own songs and play at different venues around Calgary and Southern Alberta. You may have seen Lonni and her dad Charlie Ewing, performing together at a few music venues around southern Alberta- perhaps even here at the Water Valley Celtic Music Festival a few years back.

Now residing in Calgary, Lonni and her husband Dan, have been kept quite busy by their 3 sweet young children. Music took the back burner for a little while, but Lonni is now finding a little bit of extra time to get back into songwriting, singing and playing guitar. Upon hearing Lonni’s music, you may pick out some influence of Nanci Griffith, Patty Griffin, Sheryl Crow, James Taylor and Gordon Lightfoot, with some Irish green thrown in. Since Lonni’s childhood, Lonni has had a special interest and deep love of all things Irish, especially Irish music and dance.
Lonni is very excited to be returning to the Water Valley Celtic Music Festival hopes you enjoy her music.

Rosaleen and David Gregory

Rosaleen and Dave love sharing the folk music and traditional balladry of the British Isles, to which they have added songs and stories from Canada and the USA. Rosaleen is passionate about narrative ballads – story-songs, performed sometimes with guitar accompaniment, sometimes a cappella. Dave plays clarinet, and will be accompanying Rosaleen in our concert. This year we’ll be performing a mix of ballads and shorter lyrics, with an emphasis on Celtic music: two songs from Ireland , two from Scotland, and one Canadian song about Louis Riel and the battle of Batoche.

Rosaleen and the Balladeers

Rosaleen (voice and guitar), Dave (clarinet) and John (banjo and octave mandolin) are happy to bring you this year’s set of traditional British ballads from the Francis Child collection. We will involve you in a characteristic mix featuring resourceful women, star-crossed lovers, practical jokes which misfire and just plain mayhem. “The Baffled Knight”, “The Trumpeter of Fyvie”, “Sheath and Knife”, “Queen Eleanor’s Confession” and “The Burning of Auchindoon” are all on the two CDs Rosaleen made with John and Derek Lofthouse in 2012, Sheath and Knifeand Serpent’s Knee

Rosaleen Gregory

Rosaleen is looking forward to sharing from her repertoire of Celtic and English traditional songs in a new venue, Papa Luigi’s excellent Italian restaurant, starting with a Canadian version of an old British story-song of jealousy and murder, “Young Hunting”, and progressing via two Irish songs, one Scottish and one English to an Irish goodbye with “The Parting Glass”. Some unaccompanied singing, some guitar, and partner Dave’s clarinet – a varied tribute to our joint British ancestry.

Will Quan

Will Quan is a Canadian singer songwriter. At a young age Will was influenced by the music his brothers would listen to around the house or in the car. Artists like Neil Young, Blue Rodeo and Tom Cochrane would be heard playing. At some point a guitar made it’s way into Will’s hands and so did a curiosity to write songs. Will's first full length studio album Perennials 2017 is a collection of songs of love, loss, hope and other life stories told only using an acoustic guitar, harmonica and a warm melodic mellow vocal. Will's songwriting is channeled straight from the heart. It reminds an audience that every line of a lyric has a place and reason for being and invites a listener to join in for a tale.
