Audrey GrossAs a youngster, Audrey Gross remembers listening to LP’s of the Everly Brothers, Marty Robbins and Hank Snow. Soon after picking up her first guitar at a pawn shop and learning a few chords, she discovered the joy in putting words and melodies to paper. Although her influences have changed over the years, crafting songs has become a passion and often arise based on her small town roots and fond memories of rural life.
In recent years, she has had three original songs in the finals of the Calgary Folk festival, and in the previous four years has been playing with the band “PoorBoy” based out of Calgary. Today Audrey will be joined by her friends and fine musicians, Jane Allan (Nanton) and Bob Etcheverry (Calgary) Expect to hear some familiar tunes as well as a few originals. |

Brian VolkeBrian Volke - Artist (singer/songwriter/painter)
- Father and Grandfather - Educator “I hail from Regina, Saskatchewan and have been playing guitar since the age of nine, and writing songs since age eleven. I trace my musical influences from Johnny Cash and Elvis, through the Beatles and the Monkees, then the Classic rock of Led Zeppelin and the Who. In high school I wanted to play guitar like Pete Townshend but I ended up playing like Bruce Cockburn, or maybe a mixture of the two. Then came many joyous years of playing Celtic music: Irish, Scottish, East Coast and West Coast (Spirit of the West). The best compliment I ever received was: ‘I thought you were a Maritimer!” Discography: Acres of Chrome (Solo) 2021 Carmel’s Parlour (with My Son Ted) 2014 Home Again (with Tir Na Nog) 2003 Website: bvtunes.com Email: [email protected] |
Calgary Burns Club ChoirThe Singers, who are all members of the Calgary Burns Club, started in 1994 to provide entertainment to Club members at their regular meetings. The initial focus was to sing the songs of Robert Burns and other traditional songs of Scotland, and while that focus remains, the singers also now sing a variety of other types of song which will entertain our listeners. In addition to our Club functions, the singers also provide entertainment at seniors' residences, health care facilities, and other varied functions and venues in Calgary and the surrounding area. The highlight of the group was participation in the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in 2009, the 250th anniversary of the birth of Robert Burns. To date, the group has put out 7 CD's, details of which are available on the Calgary Burns Club website, and every Saturday morning, practice sessions are held at the Danish Canadian Club. The group has a busy season ahead with a scheduled trip to Scotland in the fall to participate in the Kirkcudbright Tattoo and several other concert venues.
We sing to backing music which is played and recorded by our musician Henry Cairney. |

Gerry MadiganFolksinger/songwriter and banjo/guitar player, Gerry Madigan, is a seasoned professional with an impressive musical pedigree. Originally from Dublin, Ireland, where he was weaned on the Dublin Folk Music scene that spawned artists like Luke Kelly and The Dubliners, Paul Brady, Christy Moore, Andy Irvine and many more, he subsequently enjoyed 15 successful years on the road with his own band, The Cotton Mill Boys. Gerry has called Calgary home for the past 23 years.
But this year, especially for the Water Valley Celtic Festival, he is going back to his routes and paying tribute to the legendary Irish folk singer, Luke Kelly. As a singer and accomplished 5-string banjo player and having been a contemporary of Luke Kelly and The Dubliners, Gerry is ideally suited to pay such a tribute to this outstanding folk singer with his selection of Luke Kelly songs. Gerry’s accompaniments to his Irish and contemporary folk songs are subtle and sensitive. Whether he’s singing a classic Irish song like ‘Raglan Road’, or telling the tale of Irish emigration in his poignant song, ‘Ellis Island’, all of his performances are passionate and memorable. A show not to miss during this Water Valley Celtic Festival. Contact: [email protected] |

Jake IanThe dull winters, frigid mornings and endless skylines of the Canadian prairies have played a pivotal role in shaping the shady and desperate characters that find their way into Jake Ian’s wonderfully charming folk songs. Ian’s deep respect for the working class and obvious soft spot for the underdog makes its way into countless themes of real life, heartbreak, persistence and redemption.
Whether performing alone or with his backing band, its Jake Ian’s intelligent and lyrically focused songwriting that always takes center stage, winning him countless admirers in Western Canada’s folk and country scene. Since starting his career in the mid 2000’s, he has performed across Canada and has shared the stage with performers such as Kelly Joe Phelps, Devil Makes Three and Tim Hus. Ian released his 7th album, “Half A Day Away” in May of 2020 to much critical acclaim. The songs within are lush and dreamlike; Ian walks the production balance-beam skillfully throughout, each song beautifully crafted and executed. In March of 2021, Ian released his newest collection of songs titled, “Everything Has Holes”, a stripped down solo singer-songwriter effort. A drastic shift from his usual work, the latest album was well received and garnered stellar reviews in Canada, the United States and Europe. |
James ThurgoodJames Thurgood sings Canadian folksongs, mostly of the Maritime variety, accompanying himself on guitar, and huffing and puffing along on harmonica. He has been caught scratching out the odd tune on the fiddle as well – and we do mean ‘odd’. Originally from Nova Scotia, James grew up in a musical family with lots of Prince Edward Island and Cape Breton influence – which is to say, he came by it honestly, at least. He has been performing for more years than you can count, and assures us that he is finally about to hit the Big Time, so you are urged to see him while you still can.

Jane AllenAfter ten years as part of the country/bluegrass duo Allan & Arnell, Jane Allan decided it was time to refresh her musical direction.
Inspired by a move to the foothills of southern Alberta and during the isolation period of COVID she decided to make a CD of originals and select cover tunes. Titled “Maryfield” (after the small town in Saskatchewan where she was born) & released February 2022 it has garnered wide praise including airtime on CKUA. Eight originals complement four favourite cover tunes that many people will recognize. With a love of the guitar & a fan of folk & roots music, Jane has developed her own style. Along with some rich tunes from the ‘Old Sod’ she hopes you will enjoy her music at Water Valley. |

John LeederI’ve been making music most of my life, playing 5-string banjo (mostly clawhammer style, sort of) for 60 years and octave mandolin for 40. I enjoy many kinds of music, but my first love is Canadian traditional. I’ll be doing some of that, plus British and American Old-Time and originals in that vein. One of my sets this year will once again be a banjo concert/demonstration. The other – who knows?

Kathy Pepers (Celtic Harp)More than a decade ago Kathy Pepers fell in love with the Celtic harp and Celtic music. Since then she's appeared at various concerts and clubs, both on her own or along with the Celtic band, The Jig's Up, and has had the great pleasure of playing with folk/Celtic artists Maggie Crystal and Barry Luft. Her greatest joy is sharing beautiful music and (hopefully!) bringing a little sense of peace.
